OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) covers some optometric exams and services:
Ontario residents who are less than 19 years of age: one major eye exam for vision and general eye health every 12 months, plus any minor assessments needed.
Ontario residents who are 65 years of age and older: one major eye exam for vision and general eye health every 18 months, plus any minor assessments needed.
The patient must have a specific covered medical optical condition which requires monitoring. If diagnosed as qualified, a major eye exam every 12 months, and follow up attendance related to the condition will be covered.
Covered conditions are:
- Diabetes mellitus
- Glaucoma
- Cataract
- Retinal disease
- Amblyopia
- Visual field defects
- Corneal disease
- Strabismus
- Recurrent uveitis
- Optic pathway disease
Patients may be eligible for additional eye care under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works (OW) program.
